The Most Important Purchase You'll Make This Year

There are a few topics I am fairly passionate about, even though they do not directly impact my life.  One of them is the treatment of Asian stereotypes, and the complete lack of love from Hollywood.

When was the last time you saw an Asian as the lead role?

How about the last time you saw an Asian male as the lead role?

Well, how about the last time you saw an Asian male as the lead romantic role?

Every other ethnic stereotype has had some breakthrough address.  The black man may not be the first one to die anymore, but the asian guy remains in his tidy little stereotype box.

Maybe this doesn't really affect you.  Maybe you're not Asian, or male.  Maybe you don't think the lack of romantic lead roles makes any different to you, in your life.  Maybe you're married with kids and to you, there are much bigger things to worry about.

In which case, let me ask you: is this the kind of world you want to live in?  You want your kids to live in?  Your significant others, all those whose opinion you care about?

No, the situation is not right, any way you cut it.

Which is why I'm really glad when I went to the independent film festival a few months ago and caught this headline feature: Shanghai Kiss

It is a great movie, funny as all hell and pretty poignant to boot.

and Shanghai Kiss has the guts to star an Asian American male in a romantic comedy lead

Come on, the courage has got to be worth the purchase price alone.  Since when has anyone dared to take on the institution of Hollywood?

If you're Asian, male or female, please try to understand how much damage we suffer because of the Asian guy stereotypes.  Aren't you sick of the media promoting people like William Hung?  Don't you want to do something about it?

Buy the DVD.  Support these guys, who have poured their heart and souls into trying to send Hollywood a message.  Support Hayden Panettiere for supporting this.  There's an especially poignant little post by the writer/director himself.

John Sasaki Tried to Break In Today

This guy came in looking for Joe, one of our VPs today.  Our receptionist asked him if he had an appointment, and if not that he would probably need to make one.  I guess he thought he was above simple procedures, or maybe that it was a sign of priviledge- "maybe the PLEBIANS have to stand in line, but I don't".  That might be true at a nightclub or a restaurant, but not at Linden Lab.  Hassling our receptionist is pretty much the same as hassling our CEO, so the three of us closest to the door threw him out.  Throw is a strong word- it was three of us developer-ish guys, and while I'm the biggest one he's still a good head taller.  But we stood there and blocked him and kept telling him to leave until he finally did.

It's kind of a sad world when successful people are taught that a good rule to be successful in life is to be aggressive and intimidating.  I don't know him at all, but this is not the first run-in with "Someone Whose Name I've Heard of" that happens to be aggressive and a bit of a dick, with some air of superiority and callous disrepect of the rules of society.  We all have to get along here, eh?

Afterwards, Jim informed me that he's seen him before.  "That's John Sasaki from Channel Two, I see him around."

Restarting Atkins

I'm (re)starting the Atkins diet.  I'm going to try to ease into it, but by the end of March I expect to be at no more than 20 net grams of carbohydrates a day.

I kinda miss morning workouts with Mark Moran- his determination was always inspiring to me.

On a weirder note: my first quote from a "journalist" and they throw out my entire 5 minute talk, then proceed to make up something I didn't say at all.  Other, more experienced folks assure me that this is par for the course.

I need a tech savvy person who is in Second Life and can guide me through the process of navagating through that world.

I am offering a 7 night stay at our Hawaii retreat on the big island - walking distance to the ocean and tide pools, in pristine old hawaiian area...with tropical rainforests and luxurant native gardens. Small Hale, fully furnished
and beautiful.

I want someone who can guide me through the process and helping me create an avatar and my own space, as well as showing me how the differetn worlds within second life. I need someone somewhat tech savvy who has experience playing in Second Life.

New Hobby: Part-time Teaching

I accepted a position as a part-time instructor at the Academy of Art University, here in San Francisco.

It is not a job, per se- my regular job keeps me plenty busy at work, and is both where I derive my intellectual nourishment and how I get paid.  This is strictly a hobby.

Visions of a classroom full of young, hot, fashionable nubile co-eds still echoing from the words of my coworker (who was the one who convinced me to accept), I stepped into my lab/classroom one Tuesday, about 3 weeks ago... and came face to face with reality; fashion majors don't take Web Technologies II.

Still, it is a very enriching experience, despite the fact that my Sundays are basically all booked, and my Monday nights too, for this course.

My primary motivation of taking this course was actually to enrich my own understanding.  Ever have those moments where you try to explain something you know to someone, only to realize that you are missing bits and pieces of how it works, so the explanation doesn't come out quite right, so you're forced to look things up in order to fully understand it, and by the time you're able to explain it well, you really gained a new level of understanding?

Yeah.  Plus, these students are going for their Masters, so they're a smart, hard-working bunch.  Many have more work experience than me; I just happen to know more than them in the area they want to learn about.
